NASCAR Cup Series teams face a shortage of next-generation cars in 2022

As a whole host of NASCAR Cup Series cars ran bumper-to-bumper and door-to-door in drafting sessions during testing at Daytona International Speedway this week, there was a very tangible sense of nervousness about whether or not it was a car or two — or more — It will end up broken and devastated. And when the two-day test ended without incident, there was a clear sense of relief, as a very limited fleet of cars left teams across NASCAR in a less-than-ideal position ahead of the 2022 season.

According to a report by Fox Sports’ Bob Pockrass, teams participating in this week’s Next Gen test in Daytona indicated they have only two cars ready for the 2022 season with three weeks until the Busch Light Clash at the Colosseum and a little more. There is a month left before the Daytona 500. While NASCAR originally thought that teams would have five cars ready for each individual car number by the start of the season, supply chain problems for parts vendors and delays in delivery of key components after various modifications made to the Next Gen car led during testing Autumn reports that a number of teams currently have only two cars and a third under construction.

The shortage of next-generation cars is a big part of the new Cup Series’ growing pains. Unlike in the past, where racing teams made parts and components, all major parts except for the engine must now be purchased from authorized vendors. With no crossover from the previous generation of cars to the next generation car, teams now have to start over and assemble cars from scratch for next season.

As NASCAR further curates the stock of cars each race team owns as the next generation car emerges, NASCAR’s Senior Vice President of Racing Innovation, John Probst, maintained his belief that teams would have enough equipment to work at the start of the season.

“We’re still going for five cars per team,” Probst said. “…we are not immune to the world. We are seeing a delay in the spread of the coronavirus and supply chains and some distribution being delayed a little bit. I would say we are not currently seeing any parts or parts that will prevent any car from racing at any event. We are working with the teams to make sure that we implement Backup cars in an efficient manner.

“And I think while we’re concerned, and I think everybody’s worried – and maybe it is, that’s what we’re doing. We’re worried about things like that – we don’t see anything at the moment that anyone from the race is going to go into an event.”

As NASCAR seeks to change the business model for racing teams, reduce costs, and increase parity, racing teams will be limited to seven individual cars on a cycle at any time starting in 2022, with NASCAR and the chassis supplier determining whether the chassis is capable. They are repaired or replaced in the event of an accident. There has been some concern about whether the lack of supplies might have an impact on racing product early in the season – particularly at the Daytona 500 – as the idea has been raised that drivers could take a conservative approach for fear of ruining how many cars they have.

However, many drivers stated that this would not be the case despite the current uncertainties.

“At this level, with this talent out there and the teams out there, you can’t run at 95 percent anymore. You just have to go after it every lap,” Joey Lugano told reporters in Daytona. “…You can’t get out there and race scared. You can’t. You have to get out there 100 percent every lap.”

“(My race team has given me) confidence that we will be able to race at the maximum power we need every week,” Ricky Stenhouse Jr. said:. “For me, this is the green light I need to make sure I get out and do my job.”

The 2022 season marks the first time NASCAR has introduced a new generation of Cup cars since 2013, when the 6th generation debuted in the 2013 Daytona 500. It should be noted that some similar issues were seen with the introduction of the Gen 6, as teams faced supply shortages due to the switch to the Carbon fiber deck lids and covers.
